Our NYC Living Room Project

Upon moving to New York City, the first design that sparked the creation of Maple & Loft was our living room. We sold almost everything before the move; the leather coffee table and my esteemed burl wood floor mirror were the only items we kept. No couch, no media console, and absolutely no storage. For weeks, our boxes lined the walls, and we sat on camp chairs for close to three months!
Designing this space quickly (and efficiently) was a necessity!
A quick story about that burl wood mirror: it is my FAVORITE item. It was a fantastic HomeGoods find—further proof that you can find high-end quality at affordable prices. As we were moving, I had three different friends ask if I was selling it! It’s that special. However, because of a moving mix-up, the mirror almost didn’t make it to the city. I had to make a dozen last-minute calls just to get it packed and shipped!
Once we were in the apartment, I knew a large storage console and a pull-out couch (essential for one-bedroom living) were the top priorities. I sourced those first since lead times were long. I also ordered leather barstools that were "quick-ship" so we’d have a place to eat at the kitchen island the moment we arrived.
However, the one piece I really wanted was a dining table. I’ve always loved working at a table, even if I have a desk—it’s my favorite spot in any home. But looking at our layout, I worried a table would make the space feel too cramped next to the island.
Then it hit me: what if we flipped the room so the dining table sat in front of the windows? This would create "breathing room" on both sides and keep the light from being blocked. I was convinced, but my husband wasn't. He told me the only way he’d agree to it was if I 3D modeled the design first. So, I taught myself how to 3D model—a skill that eventually became a cornerstone of my business! It worked beautifully. Now, that table by the window is my favorite place to sit; it feels like a total European cafe moment.

To finish the space, I added height with a hutch for our barware and a tall Bird of Paradise plant in a European-style urn. With some moody nighttime lighting, artwork, and accessories, we finally have the living room of our dreams!
